Why are registered cats so expensive?
People see that pedigree, pet kittens are sold for more money than they would pay in a pet store or shelter, and assume that breeders must be making a profit. It's hard to understand how expensive breeding is without actually trying it. Reputable breeders will never make money, this is a hobby. I hope this outline will provide insight to pet owners who question prices & profits of breeders:

#1: One female kitten with breeding rights (± R7 000 – R20 000 locally or €1 500+ / $2 000+ internationally). This EXCLUDES shipping costs, which is often more expensive than the kitten.
#2: Genetic tests per cat: HCM DNA R600, PK Def DNA R600, SMA DNA R600, FELV & FIV R550, HD R2 500, HCM Ultrasound R3 000.

#3: Stud Service (R7 000 – R10 000)
#4 Registration (will vary according to the registry the breeder belongs to)
#5: Kitten rearing equipment
#6: Advertising, breed promotion, networking, about R400 per year minimum.
#7: Forms, phone calls, and other modes of communication
#8: Showing, supplies and the travel associated with showing
#9: Routine care for breeding cats
#10: Feeding the queen (Depends on Brand) - ±R1 500 per litter
#11: Kitten Formula – R220 + Puppy Boost ±R150 = R370 per litter
#12: Total food for kittens – At least R1 000 per litter (probably more - depends on litter size)
#13: Vaccinations, deworming & microchipping – R720 per kitten at least
#14: Spaying/neutering kittens prior to placement, R750 – R1 800 per kitten
#15: A vet visit for a minor problem with a kitten – R280+
#16: Possible C-section - R4 000+ normal hours and R8 000+ after hours
#17: Pyometra (A uterus infection, that can be fatal) – R3 000+

So why do breeders bother to breed multiple cats and litters?
Because we want to improve the breed and we love our cats more than our money!

Picture
A backyard cat breeder or kitten mill is not registered with a cat registry and has no affiliation to a cat club or association. Whilst some may have 'purebred' cats, they follow none of the guidelines or breed standards laid down by the cat registries. These cat breeders have no interest in the cat's welfare, health or breed standard. Backyard breeders produce as many kittens as possible for monetary gain and sell their poor quality kittens via internet 'shops' (like Gumtree, , Locanto or OLX) or via pet shops. They give reputable cat breeders a bad name!!  All registered cats come with a pedigree (with at least 4 generations) that will be stamped/signed by the Southern Africa Cat Council (SACC),  Cat Federation of South Africa (CFSA) or Cat Association Of South Africa (CASA).  The pedigree should be similar to the one on the left.

To breed or not to breed?
  • We do not sell breeding kittens to people who we have not personally known for years and who do not have an existing cattery. If you are serious about becoming a RESPONSIBLE & ETHICAL breeder, you can contact us and we can discuss the matter. Before you contact us, please read the following: I want to be a cat breeder!

  • Booking a kitten
*Please note: Just because you are enquiring about one of our kittens it does not mean you will automatically be approved. We care deeply about our kittens & if we don't feel the home is suitable, we will reserve the right to refuse someone wanting one of our babies.
Please see our “Kittens” page for kitten availability. When enquiring about our kittens, PLEASE give us some sort of introduction about
yourself.
Although we understand that the excitement of a new baby might have consumed you, please keep in mind that we are not a grocery store selling disposable goods and we will only let our babies go to good homes, thus we need some background on prospective homes...

General

There is absolutely no denying that your kitten will live a longer, safer life if kept indoors. Kittens allowed to roam freely are subject to a number of risks from sources including sickness, vehicles, dogs, predators, or humans who would steal them or harm them. Your kitten can live very happily indoors, and there are ways of giving him or her the best of both worlds – Rather indoors and fat than outdoors and flat…

  • Milk
Although cats love the taste of cow’s milk, they are fairly lactose intolerant. They lack the enzyme needed to properly digest the sugar found in cow’s milk, so more than a taste or two will usually cause diarrhoea.

  • Do Maine Coons Really Like Water
Yes they do! They won't necessarily jump into a swimming pool (some will!), but they do like to play with the water in their bowls, in the bath tub / shower or in the basin / sink (even the toilet, so be sure to keep the lid closed, especially if you have a kitten in the house!).

  • Colors
Maine Coons are available in most colors. Click here for more info & pictures.
